OK. Finally redesigned the main two leads, this time for good (maybe). Everyone knows that it's a pain for me to say when a particular design of mine is the "final cut", because I'm the type who goes back to his ideas later on and says, "Man, I can do so much better than that!" and start redesigning them.
But hopefully, that won't happen for Kevin and Lana.

In the original Captain N, Kevin is a "gamer", in the sense that he's your average kid with no interesting back story whatsoever but just so happens to really like games, and Lana is a Princess.
I changed that.
Kevin is a well-meaning good-for-nothing in this version. He's also kind of a lecher (I mean, come on, just look at his facial expression while he's holding Lana's hand). I based him more off modern gamers, peppering him with such nuances as mild nerdiness, hardcore nerdiness (when it counts), perverted male behaviors, trust-your-gut-instincts gamer attitude, and other such average gamer personality quirks. As the story progresses, he learns from his experiences and matures a little bit--which is something that of course never happened in the DiC cartoon, because he was a puke-inducing nice guy to begin with and DiC thought he'd be such a great role model for the kids. Blech.

Lana I've changed even moreso. It was tricky, but it was worth it. In the original cartoon, Lana is a "warrior princess" stereotype that I guess was either to garner randy teenag viewers or little girls who wanted to grow up to be just like Lana (And instead grew up and became accountants or some other boring job).
I blew that off right away by making her a Lady, daughter of a Noble who serves the Royal Family of Hyrule. I decided on this because it was easier for a Lady to act "behind the scenes" than it is for a Princess, whose duties are much more straightforward and diplomatic.
As for fighting ability, she was able to use anything nearby in the original cartoon, and that's all well and good. But I changed it anyway.
Her major weapon is Kirby, her pet. He's replacing Duke the dog, because (Though I've nothing against dogs!) his existence in the show was both pointless and "slapped together". You all know what Kirby's capable of, so I don't need to explain.
However, Lana also has another ability: she can summon other videogame characters to help her team fight. (Think Yuna, from Final Fantasy X.) I decided on this because, in the end, there were many characters I wanted to use, but couldn't find a place for (Like Articuno or Ifrit). So I thought, "Well, the only they'd show up is if they're summoned," so there you go. Lana gets both a "pet weapon" and a special ability.
As for personality, Lana's original character from the show was just... SO cookie-cutter "warrior princess." So I added many of the insecurities of youth to Lana's personality. She's far more demure now, and has a hard time opening up to those she doesn't know. She's afraid, sometimes, to state her opinions because she doesn't want to upset anyone. She's also scared of spiders. Not the kind you can just flick off your shoulders. The kind of spiders you find in Videoland are the kind that can just as easily eat you as they can weigh down your car.

Anyway, that's it for some insider info. I'm going back to make more concept desiging and more practice pages before I start really getting into it.

Duke’s existence wasnt pointless and Kevin did have a backstry. You cant do Kevin and Lana better than DiC. A warrior princess is not a stereotype
