Description

New day, new series, new art style! I'm experimenting with the digital inking style today, ladies and germs.
Until Brawl comes out, we're stuck waiting. I know I've already featured an entire series of deviations devoted to the awesomeness of the SSB newcomers, so I'm going to make some additional pics of characters I wish could have made it into the game.
I have traveled far (on the Internet), I have traveled near (In my corner and locker where I keep my old games), to find the most worthy champions of Nintendo's past who truly deserve a seat among the Super Smash Bros.
The first on the list: Mikey Jones, from Startropics and Startropics II. I should start this commnetary with thanking :icondiegichigo: for his deviation "NEWCOMER: Mike Jones", which inspired me to go along with this art series. See it here: [link]
Mikey is the main protagonist of the NES epic Startropics series, which spanned only two games on the NES. They were also the rare NES games that had save slots. Startropics played much like The Legend of Zelda, to the point where some fans saw it as a parody of Zelda.
While the first game focused on a young boy's quest to rescue his father from aliens, the second game tasked Mikey with time traveling to protect the world from he clutches of Zoda, who once again had aspirations of world dominance.
While the first game is fondly recalled as a truly classic title, it was deeply flawed. Some puzzles could only have been solved by looking up clues in the instruction manual (Literally, "Check out th' enclosed instruction book!"), a major obstacle for those who bought the game without said manual. Additionally, the bosses ranged from either too easy or wildly hard. Despite its shortcomings, Startropics is still quite a classy NES game.
The second game outdid the first. It corrected nearly every flaw in the first game, and at the same time introduced our hero Mikey to new environments via the time travel aspect. It was also far more sarcastic in tone in comparison to the first game, often editing out what Mikey was saying with "Blah blah blah." STII didn't even try to have a well-rounded story like the first game, it was just wackiness for wackiness' sake, and it was awesome, dadgummit!
However, it's been almost 15 years since Startropics II was released on NES, and it doesn't look like ST fans will be seeing it ever again. The first game has already been rereleased on Nintendo's VC, but that's about the lengths of Mikey's return.
Putting him in Super Smash Bros. Brawl would have pleased many Nintendo and Startropics fans, and it would have fit perfectly since they were putting heavy emphasis on the "past and present" character set list of the game.
But alas, Mikey, you are nowhere to be found. Will you ever return?

Here's to hoping!

I absolutely love his nice sharp look in this style, but the only thing that irks me is his hair. It sort of looks like the "generic spikey style" that say, the Fire Emblem guys or maybe Pit have. I'm rather fond of his rather odd little swoopy pseudo-pompadour he's got going in front, but that's just me. Others might think it's ridiculous. :XD: All the little details, though, right down to the freckles on his cheeks are just perfect... and adorable. But that 'adorable' is in there because I'm a chick, y'know.

In short, love it regardless, keep up the good work.
